Spain’s government says the United States has meddled in the Catalan election to ensure it reflects the views of the Spanish elite, in what it calls a blatant interference.
In a statement, the government called on the United Nations to investigate the alleged interference in Catalonia’s parliamentary elections.
The Spanish government accused the US of “a concerted attempt to undermine the integrity of the Catalan institutions” in a statement published on its official website.
In its statement, Spain accused the United State of a “coordinated attempt to destabilise Catalonia’s democratic process”.
The government said the US was trying to “sow discord in the Spanish political system” and said it would respond to any US actions.
The US, which has said it respects Catalonia’s right to hold regional elections, is the world’s third-largest economy.
